Brian towered over every other kid in 8th grade.
he wasn't genetically lucky
just older than them.

Held back twice
Brian swore
this year he was gonna make it.

He'd figure a way out of middle school
and finally see his friends.

There had to be a trick,
some magic he was missing
and he was so sure that he could pull it off.
This year
unlike last year
when the rain made it hard to log on every day
and all the schools were virtual.

Or the year before,
when he was so hungry,
because his mom needed to pick up another shift
and he had to get his sister ready for school each day.

This time he would show everyone what he could do
if he just tried...really hard
and forgot
Every time the system failed before.
